"Night Lights" First EP Review
The first EP review of “Night Lights” ever! By Bobby Spencer, of The Only.
In your music it reminds me a lot of the original pop punk like the old Blink, and simple plan, it’s good stuff, but I think it needs more dynamics. The drums could use more fills like in “Just One Night” at the part right before you go into the first verse, add a fill like in the beginning of Of Mice & Men - Farewell to Shady Glade. Something fast and simple but lets the listener get into it from the get go. That type of fill always gives it that kick and power. This type of fill always works in the middle of a break down too, in fact its one of my favorites to use. Other bands you can take drumming styles from are
Alesana, very good for straight playing and fills to pump it up.
We The Kings, very good for that drive
Paramore (Riot) the dynamics in that are simple but so filling in the music.
check those out for the drum essence of writing.
Vocals: To set your self apart from other bands around this area, you may want to add another vocalist for the background harmonies, maybe even a girl for one song or so. Reason is girls can’t really sing along with a guys voice half the time because the range is different so if you add a harmony in the background in certain parts with a guy in falsetto or just a girl then it adds the dynamic and difference to your music to help it stick out above the rest in your genre.
Over all sound: You guys have a really good sound and its something that is easily able to jump right into, which is always important. The thing you may want to add is another guitarist for again the dynamics and drive. So while your doing rhythm you have someone in the background doing lead and it adds the kick to the sound. Three piece bands like Blink and Greenday sound good, but compared to the sound of Sum41 or even a newer band compared to the others like All Time Low or The Starting Line just bring so much more in my opinion.
Night Lights: Over all the EP sounds good and has that pop punk feel to it, nicely job on it over all.
